How a Solar Installation Works in Fife
Last updated: 28 October 2026
A solar installation in Fife follows five steps: complete our 2-minute survey, an installer partner visits your home for a no-obligation assessment, your system is designed with SP Energy Networks DNO notification, installation takes 1–2 days, and you receive MCS certification and SEG registration. We install through MCS-certified partners.
Step 1: No-obligation survey
Start by completing our 2-minute online survey. Tell us your postcode, property type, current heating and what you are interested in. One of our advisors will call you within 2 hours during office hours (Mon-Fri 9am–5:30pm) to discuss your home and answer your questions.
Step 2: Home assessment and system design
If your home looks suitable, an installer partner visits your Fife property to check your roof structure, orientation, shading and electrical setup. They assess whether your property is in a conservation area or is a listed building — common in St Andrews, East Neuk villages and Dunfermline — and design a system tailored to your home.
Step 3: SP Energy Networks DNO notification
All solar systems in Fife are connected to the SP Energy Networks distribution grid. Systems up to 3.68kW require a G98 notification, which is a simple notification with no approval wait. Larger systems need a G99 application, which can take around 45 working days for approval. Your installer partner handles all DNO paperwork as standard.
Step 4: Installation day
On installation day, scaffolding is typically erected first. Panels are mounted on a railing system fixed to your roof joists, and the inverter is installed — usually in your loft, garage or utility room. Wiring connects the system to your consumer unit. For most residential installations the whole process takes 1–2 days.
Step 5: Handover and registration
Once installation is complete, your installer partner will test the system, set up your monitoring app, issue your MCS certificate, and register you for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) so you get paid for excess electricity exported to the grid. You receive full documentation and warranty details.
Aftercare
After installation, our aftercare team is available by phone and email. Manufacturer warranties on panels (typically 25 years), inverters (10–12 years) and batteries (10 years) are provided. We install through MCS-certified partners and our team is here to help long after the panels are on your roof.
